What is the role of the committee?
This select committee is responsible for fulfilling all the overview and scrutiny functions in relation to the social care of children and young people aged 0 – 19. This includes:
- the social services functions of the Council
- questioning other service providers to children and young people in Lewisham
- fulfilling the Councils overview and scrutiny functions in relation to the implementation of the Children Act 2004
- in relation to the provision of services for those under 19, exercise the Councils powers under the Education Acts, School Standards and Framework Act 1998, Education Act 2002 and all other relevant acts
- exercising the powers of the Council in relation to the provision of opportunities for education, training and learning outside the school environment including pre school services
- making comments and recommendations to the Executive on the contents and the proposed contents of plans which make up the Council’s policy framework
- considering children protection provision for vulnerable children, early years provision; special needs provision; schools and related services; youth services, including Connexions; youth offending and challenging behaviour and transitional services for those leaving care.
