The first ever directly elected Mayor of London and the London Assembly were elected in May 2000, formally taking up positions on 13 July 2000. The Mayor and Assembly are simultaneously elected for four years terms.
The Mayor and the Assembly's work covers the Greater London region. Their purpose is to promote economic and social development and improve the environment in Greater London. The Mayor is charged with devising strategies and action plans to tackle London wide issues. The Assembly provides a check and balance on the Mayor, scrutinises his performance and investigates issues of London wide significance.
