Elected representatives

Council meeting

Lewisham’s elected representatives work for us at four levels:

The Mayor and local councillors are responsible for local services including street cleaning, schools, libraries, neighbourhood wardens and social services. The Mayor and councillors are elected every four years.

The Mayor of London and Lewisham’s London Assembly member are responsible for Citywide policies and services such as the Fire Brigade, Metropolitan Police and public transport. The Mayor of London and London Assembly are elected every four years.

Our Members of Parliament (MPs) are responsible for national issues including the economy, criminal law and pensions. The borough is divided into three parliamentary constituencies: Lewisham Deptford, Lewisham East and Lewisham West. Elections are held every four to five years to elect MPs.

Nine Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) represent the whole of London. They help to make European wide laws on issues such as pollution, consumer protection and employment. MEPs are elected every five years.
