The London Borough of Lewisham has 54 Councillors, each elected by, and representing a small part of the borough (called a 'Ward').

There are three Councillors for each Ward and 18 Wards in all. They are elected every four years.

A Ward is commonly the immediate area in which the Councillor lives, but doesn't have to be - although local Councillors do have to live or work somewhere in the borough.

Within this ward Councillors are responsible for:

  • listening to and representing the views of residents
  • making sure services are delivered effectively in the area
  • getting involved locally.

Whatever your motivation, being a local councillor can be a very rewarding experience. It gives you an opportunity to help your local community, make change happen and be part of the team responsible for the future and well-being of Lewisham and all the people that live, work and visit here.

Also, being a councillor enables you to gain political experience and useful skills you can put to use in other parts of your personal and professional life.

Want to know more?

You can look at the pages in this section or find more information at www.beacouncillor.org.uk (external websites). The guidance and information you will receive will be entirely non-party political. The aim is to provide just enough information to enable individuals to make an informed choice, and to be aware of timeframes involved in either working with a political party or standing as an independent councillor.
