Giving notice to marry

If you want a civil ceremony or a non-Anglican religious ceremony, we recommend you contact the register office at least one month (but no more than twelve months) before you intend to marry. You will each be charged a fee of £30 when you give notice.

If you both live in Lewisham you should each give notice at Lewisham’s register office. If you live in different registration districts, you should each give notice separately in your own district.

If you are subject to immigration control, you will need to apply to the Home Office for a Certificate of Approval before contacting a register office.

You must each book an appointment for a personal interview with the Superintendent Registrar. At the interview, we’ll ask you to give us:

1. Information about yourself and your partner

2. The date and venue of the wedding

3. Proof of your current address
-  at least two proofs, one of which should be a recent council tax bill or utilities bill

4. Proof of your name, age and nationality
-  a current valid full passport (or, where appropriate, a Home Office travel document or a national identity card)
-  OR a birth certificate and a second current document such as a credit card or driving licence.

If you have changed your name, we need to see a court-stamped deed poll document or statutory declaration.

5. Proof that you are legally free to marry, if you have been previously married (or registered as a civil partner).
If you have been widowed, the death certificate of your former spouse and possibly the marriage certificate. If you are divorced, a decree absolute bearing the court's original stamp.

If you are under 18 years of age, you will need to produce a completed parental consent form (this is available from the register office).
